I'm just wondering what the best way for them to stay on the radar of young filmmakers is all.Īlthough a lot of what they're learning online is how to make fancy transitions or trending FX vs the actual meat and potatoes of editing which ultimately is story telling. I guess they really don't need to though (AVID) they have their established set and they continue to refine and focus that. Saving Private Ryan was also cut on a Steenbeck which given the complexity of the first 30 mins of that film is crazy to think about.
Steenback, cut my first student 16mm film on Steenbeck.loved it. But I also think they should try to stay relevant to younger audiences and right NOW, but thats' more of awareness and NOT dumbing down. What I feel they should focus on is their prestige. I don't even have to think about what my fingers are doing in AVID, I just do it, sometimes feels like the computer can't keep up with me in some cases. I checked out of FCP because of what X did to that platform. I disagree to a point, I don't think they should CHANGE the way they are. Avis’s strength lies outside of the world of YouTube celebrities which is exactly why you don’t see any of them influencing others. Honestly I love Avid for what I do but if I was working solo for web content (as many people do these days) then I likely wouldn’t use it either.

I don’t think Avid necessary doesn’t want to have these users, I think they just recognize that the demographic isn’t there anyway so they would rather cater their software to the demographic that does use it. That’s probably what made it less enticing to YouTubers in the first place since they often want simple and cheap.Ĭombine that with the fact that many young editors believe the internet to be the medium of choice for them and you get a lot of people who don’t see the benefit of a system built around broadcast and long form. Avid has a high learning curve and pricey subscription vs something like FCP X or Premiere. Honestly I think the younger generation that is learning to edit from stuff like YouTube is ultimately not the Avid demographic.
Which baffled me to the core, because for as long as I can remember I wanted to "make films" and the big directors were always people who I aspired to understand creatively.

A larger than majority who responded (not scientific by any means) responded with CASEY being their go to over (insert movie director). On another filmmaking board I put out the question: Would you rather meet Casey Neistat (youtube influencer) or (Insert your fav feature film/tv director here) if you could have an hour of their undivided attention.

My professional career has been almost exclusively AVID MC as well, which is why I'm trying to get a pulse on the market in here. People just don't aspire for high level films and television in the same way as they did a few years ago. I agree, still the amount of people who are "influencing editors" are doing so because the people who are watching want to build their own youtube brand. Looking for something more local?
